Carrie Cracknell directs Nora, a short film responding to Ibsen’s A Doll’s House

Following her critically-acclaimed production of A Doll’s House at the Young Vic, Genesis Fellow Carrie Cracknell has directed a short film imagining what a modern-day version of Ibsen’s female protagonist, Nora, might look like.

Co-written by Carrie in collaboration with writer Nick Payne, the film was commissioned by the Guardian, the Young Vic and The Space and stars Hattie Morahan.

Writing for The Guardian, Carrie explains:

“It is tempting, now, to look at the play’s sexual politics as dated and dusty, tensions from an era that bears little or no resemblance to the modern world. But as I worked on the play, I kept having nagging doubts. Of course the landscape of women’s rights has changed irrevocably in the last 100 years; but there are also complex dilemmas for many women which are no closer to being resolved.”
