Diamond commission for Will Todd
Monday, 19 March 2012
Leading young British composer Will Todd has been commissioned to write a new choral work for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral on 5 June.
The Call of Wisdom will be premiered in the presence of The Queen by The Diamond Choir – a specially-formed choir made up of young singers aged 10-13 from all over the UK – alongside the Choristers of St Paul’s Cathedral and the Chapel Royal. Conducted by St Paul’s Director of Music, Andrew Carwood, this unique performance will be broadcast live in the UK.
With words by Michael Hampel, The Call of Wisdom is based on a passage from the Book of Proverbs in the Old Testament, in which God talks to his people about the value of wisdom and truth. It will be published before 5 June so that choirs throughout the UK and the Commonwealth can sing it in their own Diamond Jubilee services.
The Genesis Foundation has twice commissioned Will Todd to compose new works, both of which were composed for Harry Christophers and The Sixteen: Among Angels (2006) and Stay with me Lord (2008), which were recorded and released on a critically-acclaimed disc, Padre Pio Prayer.
