Heart of Darkness nominated for South Bank Sky Arts Award

Tarik O’Regan’s Heart of Darkness has been nominated for best opera in the South Bank Sky Arts Awards 2012.

The awards, now in their sixteenth year, celebrate the towering achievements in the arts over the past year.

Based on Joseph Conrad’s haunting tale of colonialism in the Congo, O’Regan’s opera began life as part of OperaGenesis, a collaboration between the Genesis Foundation and the Royal Opera House’s ROH2 department designed as a catalyst for the creation of new opera.

Following its world premiere at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Studio in November 2011, critics praised it as “an auspicious debut” (Anna Picard, Independent on Sunday) with “music of startling beauty” (Stephen Pritchard, The Observer).

The winners will be announced by Melvyn Bragg on 1 May in a ceremony that will be broadcast on Sky Arts at 9pm.
