New play by Palestinian writer Dalia Taha to be staged at Royal Court Theatre

As part of the Genesis Foundation funded International Playwrights Programme at the Royal Court, Fireworks, a new play by Palestinian writer Dalia Taha, will be staged in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs from Thursday 12 February to Saturday 14 March 2015.

Fireworks (Al’ab Nariya) gives us a new way of seeing how war fractures childhood.  Set in a Palestinian town, the play focuses on two children; eleven year-old Lubna and twelve year-old Khalil. As a siege intensifies outside their apartment block, fear for their safety becomes as crippling as the conflict itself.

Fireworks was first developed during the Royal Court’s International Residency in August 2013 and finished this summer when Dalia returned to London. It is particularly relevant that the Royal Court is able to programme Fireworks at a time when conflict continues to erupt in Gaza. Dalia’s play is a personal and considered response to the situation there.

The Genesis Foundation funds the International department’s workshops in diverse countries as well as residencies at the Royal Court. This programme finds and develops the next generation of professional playwrights from around the world and provides them with a springboard to gain greater public and critical attention.
