Royal Court play wins Tony Award

Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris has won the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play following its critically-acclaimed UK premiere by the Royal Court.

Described by The New Yorker as “hilariously funny – a master class in comic writing and playing” and by the Guardian as “offensively delicious and combustible”, Clybourne Park was widely praised for its provocative exploration of racial prejudice in the age of political correctness.

Following its success at the Royal Court in 2010, the play transferred to the West End and won the 2011 Olivier Award for Best New Play.

Accepting the award, Bruce Norris said:

“I never thought the play would be successful even at Playwrights Horizons two years ago. It’s my nature to always anticipate failure. So I am still shocked at winning this, and I’ve been very happy at the consistent responses from audiences all around the country to this play.”

The awards ceremony was broadcast live on CBS on Sunday 10 June 2012.
