Young Vic announces Finn Beames’ first play as Genesis Future Director

Genesis Future Directors Award-recipient Finn Beames directs an evening of short plays by Tennessee Williams: Auto-da-Fé, The Strangest Kind of Romance and Summer at the Lake.
Providing a rare opportunity to see Tennessee Williams’ shorter works, this collection of gripping plays explores masculinity through the prism of male identity, sexuality and cultural expectations. In each play, we see the devastating consequences of social isolation. Finn Beames’ production asks if the pressures exerted on some young men make it impossible for them to value themselves.
Finn Beames is the fourth recipient of a Genesis Future Directors Award, following Tinuke Craig (also 2014), Matthew Xia (2013) and Ben Kidd (2012). He is the founder and Artistic Director of Bodycorps – a company established in 2011 to commission new work in theatre and opera. Most recently Bodycorps premiered The Anatomy of Melancholy (Testbed1, Battersea) directed by Beames and made possible with funding from the Wellcome Trust. Beames’ previous credits include a new opera Terrible Lips (co-written with composer Kate Whitley) and Uncle Dima, a music theatre collaboration with composer Gavin Higgins, as well as the Young Vic’s school production: All Stones All Sides in 2014.
Established in 2012, the Genesis Future Directors Award was created to nurture emerging young directors by providing them with an opportunity to explore and develop their craft while creating their first fully resourced production at the Young Vic, recognised for its engagement with young directors. The Award will provide Finn Beames with support from the theatre’s unique creative network, which includes Artistic Director David Lan and current Genesis Fellow Natalie Abrahami, former Director of the Gate Theatre, Notting Hill.
